Meknes is a city in northern Morocco. It is named after a Berber tribe which was known as Miknasa (native Berber name: Imeknasen) in the medieval North African sources. Meknes is an imperial city with a lot of historical monuments and natural sites. The city is located near the Atlas Mountains.

The high defensive walls of Meknes are pierced by the monumental gates: Bab Mansour Laalej, Bab Lakhmis, Bab Berdain, Bab Jdid, etc. There are also many religious buildings, especially the many mosques from successive periods and the madrasas. Tourists will certainly want to explore such attractions at Place Hedim, Heri es-Souani, the Meknes Royal Golf Course, Dar Jamai (a palace that now serves as the Museum of Moroccan Arts), the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail, Habs Qara (an underground prison), the Medina of Meknes Mosque and more. The harmonious blending of the Islamic and European styles of the 17th century Maghreb are still evident today. The prices in Meknes are among the most reasonable in Morocco. Meknes isn't a shopper's paradise, but it's certainly cheaper than nearby Fez.
Transport
Meknes is connected by train to most major cities like , Tangier, Marrakech , Fes and Oujda .there are only two railway stations in this city : one is located in the new town and other one is a bit further east.
In the west of the medina there is a main bus station in Meknes - Gare Routière. So going by train to the nearby cities is comfortable but if you want to go faster it's better to use buses.
Grand taxis arrive and leave from several places in Meknes. There is a big taxi rank opposite the road of the Institut Francais so you can take taxi there.
Eat and drink
The main road in Meknes is Rue Antsirape , here you can find a lot of restaurants and bars where there is a possibility to have dinner or just a snack while walking around the city. There are few restaurants in Rue Ghana which are rather popular as dishes on their menus are not so expensive , they can propose also national dishes such as harira, tagine, cous cous and of course rotisserie chicken. Almost all the restaurants are opened until the midnight.
The main place in the medina named Bab El-Mansur, near it you can find a market with a big chose of fresh products: different kinds of olives, sweets, pickles and other tasty things. If you want to have a drink Meknes is a suitable place for that as here there are a lot of bars lining along the streets.
What To Do
Bab Mansour is the largest of Meknes' many gates, it's located near medina's main square.
Place Hedim is the medina's main square with numerous cafe and snack spots.
Meknes Royal Golf Course is a marvelous place with beautiful gardens , here is also a public cafe on the grounds so it's possible to eat on the terrace overlooking the course.
Dar Jamai is an old palace which is situated in Place Hedim. Now it's the Museum of Moroccan Arts which exhibits the artifacts, old copies of the Qur'an and others.
Habs Qara is a huge underground prison where Moulay Ismail kept Christian prisoners.
Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail non-Muslims are not permitted to enter, so people can view the tombs of Moulay Ismail and his relatives from the entrance only.
Al masjid AlAdam is Meknes' largest and oldest mosque but non-Muslims can't enter there too.
It's worth to see roman ruins of Volubilis which are in a short trip from Meknes.
Moulay Idriss Zerhoun is in 14km from Meknes and just next to Volubilis, it's the small city on a hill which was founded by Moulay Idriss II and is an Islamic holy site. A moussem is held here each year.
